What is the Human Connection?

In my book Leadership for the Fourth Age, I talk about how the human connection is vital to the times that we are in now.

In the Fourth Imagination Age, it is vital to

  • innovate,

  • push the boundaries and

  • move faster than ever before.

To do this well, it requires collaboration, excellent teamwork, and everyone turning up at their best selves. It is vital to hire smart people and then let them get on with their work. It is no longer enough to focus solely on people's smarts, it is vital to plug into what makes people human to nurture individuals through self mastery, teams through human connection, and organisations through the environment or culture. 

But it wasn’t always this way.

I spent my first 15 years in HR telling people what not to do. My job was to hire the best and brightest talent, then try to control them with endless policies and paperwork.

When I co-founded the rapidly growing technology company Vend, I knew we could do better. I threw out all of the conventional management theories and learned what really works….

If you are like the other executives I coach, you are clever, smart and well intentioned. Your job is dealing with strategy and problem solving. The days on the tools are getting fewer and fewer as your job relies on getting things done through other people. 

You are already successful, you get things done efficiently and have got it all together. Well, that’s what it looks like on the outside anyway.

On the inside, there is a lot going on. You dread having to deal with THAT person again who pushes your buttons, having to sit through yet another unproductive meeting that you just can’t seem to call out as such, or have yet another go at getting people on board with your strategy. Some days you head home exhausted, either through holding it all in, not knowing how or not prepared to call things out, or because the floodwaters broke and you said something you shouldn’t have. 

People look to you for strength and clarity. And you can do it, projecting a calm and confident exterior - but it comes at a personal cost which not many people realise.

Each coaching engagement is for a minimum of 6 sessions, normally spaced over 3 months. Sessions are booked in no more frequently than fortnightly and no less frequently than monthly.

Coaching is supported with a leadership manual, a copy of Leadership for the Fourth Age and coaching software.

Clients have access to Mel in between times for on the spot advice and guidance.
